Description:
Hans Schnellar timpani, timpanist of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra under Gustav Mahler, circa 1910-20. These timpani were called "travel timps", "Reisepauken". To tune, the kettle (hammered copper) is pressed against the heads by the tuning handle. It is lifted from underneath. The very simple but highly effective system makes quick tuning changes very easy. A half turn is a second. Presently used by Chamber Orchestra of Europe, the Concentus Musicus & Nikolaus Hanoncourt's ensemble. Ideal for Baroque repertoire, Mozart, Haydn and chamber music settings.
